Kilimanjaro: Trip booked for October

After much planning and deliberating, my trip to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is finally booked.
The trip started out as an idea of something I wanted to do with my daughters before my 60th birthday. We started talking about it around Christmas 2011 and some more last summer. After considering the time, cost and desire to climb a 19,000 foot mountain, Sharm and Subhadra opted not to do the trip. I was okay with their decision because after all, it was my idea to do something this crazy. Sunita and I decided to go ahead and do it.
I did a great deal of research in the last few months. I compared the offerings of several companies and finally decided to go with Shades of Green which is a local agency in Tanzania. They have been great at providing information and answering our questions in a timely manner. Initially we started out with a climb up the mountain then we added a 4 day safari, then a 5 day stay in Zanzibar. I used to read about Zanzibar in many Harlequin romance novels and now I can’t believe that I am going there!
Here are the maps of the destinations:
Area map of Tanzania
Rongai route map
Elevation map of Rongai
Safari map including Ngorongoro, and Lake Manyara
Zanzibar map
Stone Town, Zanzibar

Our trip started out with Sunita and I. Now we are up to six people. The others include my sister Sabena, Robin’s cousin (and my next door neighbour and surrogate big brother) Abbi, and Sabena’s friends Donna F and Donna L. Our airfares are booked and we are flying on the same itineraries out of Toronto.

I’ll be posting more about our preparation and training for the big event/s as we move along, If you are interested in joining us, let me know and I can give you the details.
